Sunbeams

March 11, 2024

This week was a tough one. It seems like everyone I know is going through something difficult. Lots of tears were shed in Piacenza amongst my friends the past few days, because of things happening back home or because of daily stressors that come with living here. We did our best to cheer each other up – going out to eat, buying each other candy and flowers, going on walks, doing nothing together, and enjoying every moment of sunshine between all the rain.

“A single sunbeam is enough to drive away many shadows.” – St. Francis of Assisi

My mom was talking about St. Francis’ quotes yesterday, and this one struck me. This week was heavy and dreary, but there were a few noticeable moments of sun.

On Tuesday morning, I woke up to a literal sunbeam coming through the window, and was so excited that I immediately rolled out of bed and went on a run.

On Wednesday, I bought sour candy and watched Full Swing.

On Friday, the day started with a sweet friend bringing my classmates and me yellow flowers for International Women’s Day. It ended with a rainy night walk and an hour and a half phone call, laughing with a good friend.

On Saturday, Pauline and I went to the market and bought flowers for a friend. I spent the rest of the day painting and relaxing.

I guess I don’t have much to say this week, other than that I’m thankful for the little moments of sun. I’m thankful for the community I have here, and I’m thankful for my friends and family back home who are only a phone call away. I’m thankful for flowers and good food and little joys.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. – John 1:5

In dark times and dark places, you might be the only light people see. So don’t lose your spark of joy and hope. Encourage the people around you, whether you know what’s going on in their life or not.

Be the light!!
